This mock up book cover was part of a live brief project from uni. Underdogs by Louise Powell is an upcoming novel, published by John Murray Press as a part of their long-running JM Originals Imprint. The book Underdogs is based around greyhound racing, so therefore I chose to design the silhouette of that kind of dog.
The book cover design took colours and patterns from different aspects of the book.
The sparkle tile: using yellow and orange represents coins and jewellery.
The swirl tile: using orange and white represents hand boiled sweets.
The curved tile: represents the racetrack.
The six & stripe tile: using pink for the six and white and dark blue for the stripes, this represents the pattern that can be typically seen on a greyhound racing jacket.
The checkered tile: using dark blue this pattern represents the finish line at the end of a race.
Connecting the six tripe with the curves and the checkered tile, it maps out a dog character being last on the racetrack. Every other tile represents other aspects of the story. The dog throughout the story is plot B running alongside everything else and that what I wanted to show in my pattern.
